  Part 1.
  Convention for naming of GefStd.

Flugmeldemess Stellungen, Jägerleit Stellungen etc. were named after objects from nature: Flowers, berries, mammals, reptiles, fish etc.  Units with some sort of organizational affiliation, were as a rule named from the same group.  Many site in The Netherlands were thus named after mammal predators.  The GefStd were given names following a similar convention, but now the grouping was depending on the level in the organization.  JDs were thus named after figures in the ancient Greek history.  During reorganizations the GefStd would retain the name if the successor formation performed the same function.  The GefStd of Lft.Reich at the Reichssportsfeld thus retained the name HEROLD throughout all the organizational changes from it's inception in 1940 as Befehlshaber der Luftverteidigung im Luftgau III.  If the formation occupying the GefStd relocated, it would bring along the name of the GefStd to the new location, but add a number to the name e.g. HEROLD 2 was at Berlin-Wannsee.

Several Luftwaffe command facilities had to re-locate as the ground situation changed or in a few instances due to heavy bombing.  In all the cases I have examined, this was to a prepared site - an Ausweichgefechtsstand - most importantly of all equipped with the requisite communications.

NJG callsigns.

I have chased these callsigns for 30 years and found them nowhere published.  Mr. Rod Mackenzie was kind enough to share copies from PRO AIR 51/292 with me.  This file contains analysis of radio intercepts conducted by the RAF Y-Service.  One document lists a number of NJG callsigns as given below.  The Luftwaffe was as the rest of the Wehrmacht extremely OPSEC and COMSEC conscious.  It it thus astounding that the JK and JD GefStd and the FlH never changed their callsigns.  The flying units incl. the NJG changed their callsigns periodically.  The callsigns below were effective for a period in 1944.
